Ruins of ancient defence work found

Chinese cultural specialists have found ruins of an ancient defensive wall similar to the world-famous Great Wall in the outback of the northwestern Gansu Province.

The ruins of the wall, which was 2.4-km long and 4-meter high with four beacon towers, were found by a survey team in Yumen City, in an isolated spot along the ancient Silk Road, earlier this month, said the team leader Zhang Bin.

He said the wall was built with red willow wood and sand during the Han Dynasty, at least 2,100 years ago. The wall was much older than the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) Great Wall that extends nearly 9,000-km in north China.
