Badaling Great Wall
About 75 km northwest of Beijing downtown, Badaling is the most visited section of the Great Wall in China. With an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level, Badaling Great Wall finds its place at the north edge of “Guangou” Valley. Together with 15-km-away Juyong Pass and Water Pass, Badaling Great Wall makes an understanding defensive system. Now the Badaling Expressway connects the popular destination with Beijing City.
Archeologists found the wall ruins of Warring States Period (475-221 B. C.), which dates back to at least 2200 years ago. About 1500 years ago during South and North Dynasty, the portion of the Great Wall was rebuilt and extended. The present walls were built during the Ming Dynasty, along with a military outpost reflecting the location's strategic importance.
This part of the Great Wall was very well built with large stone slabs and bricks. The average height is 7.5 meters, and 6.5 meters wide at the bottom, 5.8 meters wide on top, which can allow 10 soldiers or 5 horses walk abreast.
In 1952, Badaling Great Wall became the first section of the wall to open to tourists. In 1984, the walls underwent large-scale renovation, 19 towers were restored, repaired walls extended more than 3741 meters long. Up to now, more than 130 million tourists have visited the great site including 372 foreign leaders from many countries like US President Richard Nixon, Jimmy Cater, Ronald Reagan, George Bush (both), British Queen, etc.
Entering at the Badaling gate you have a choice to either to go left or right. To the right the wall you walk further along the wall as it climbs the hills more gradually. To the left the wall climbs at a much steeper angle. Or you may possible take a cable car to see the Great Wall with great ease.
In the Badaling area, you can find a big Great-Wall-of-China Museum and the Great Wall National Theater, where you will have a better understanding of the Great Wall.
In 1987, the Great Wall was approved as “World Cultural Heritage” by the United Nation. While in 1992, as the elite part of the Great Wall, Badaling accepted the “World Cultural Heritage” certificate from UNECSO.
